Unitized Curtain Wall

Unitized curtain wall system is an external building façade, usually aluminum-framed wall, containing in-fills of glass, aluminum spandrel panels, thin composite panels or concrete spandrel panels.

The framing is attached to the building structure and does not carry the floor or roof loads of the building. The wind and gravity loads of the curtain wall system are transferred to the building structure, typically at the floor line.

Unitized curtain wall system is composed of large units that are pre-assembled and glazed in factory before shipping to building site for installation. With unitized curtain wall forming the core component of the external envelope of the building, thermal efficiency, sound transmission and fire safety becomes the key performance criteria of the system.

Spandrel Panel Thermal Insulation

With constant heat gain through the building facade in tropical climates, thermal insulation for unitized curtain wall is a key component to satisfy thermal performance requirements specified in the Overall Thermal Transmittance Value, OTTV design of the building facades. The importance of specifying the correct amount of thermal insulation is essential as most of the unitized curtain wall system encompasses huge amount of glass facades with aluminum frames which transmit heat easily into the building if it is not well designed.

Cool ’n’ Comfort SL stone wool insulation with low thermal conductivity properties provides an effective solution for unitized curtain wall. Cool ’n’ Comfort SL is installed at the back of the spandrel panel and lined with aluminum foil or thin metal sheets. OTTV requirements in South East Asia countries generally specify not more than 50W/m2. This can be achieved with the use of Cool ’n’ Comfort SL in varying thicknesses from 50mm to 100mm, depending on the building envelop design.
