The project
The Livingston Centre, which is located between Edinburgh and Glasgow, is a Land Securities shopping and leisure destination that has undergone three phases of expansion since the 1970s.
The goal was to extend the original building and transform it into a striking landmark that was also sustainable.
The challenge
The new part of the building had to be suspended over an existing road which meant that fire protection was of utmost importance.
The aesthetics of the underside of the structure were also a key consideration.
The solution
ROCKWOOL technical experts worked with Threesixty Architecture to produce fire calculations to meet their fire engineering strategy requirements for the 70,000-square-foot development.
Hi-Impact Soffit Slab has a A2-s1, d0 reaction to fire classification and provides protection as well as featuring a stylish off-white decorative coating. Its additional 6mm rigid cement fibre board facing is also non-combustible and gives increased impact resistance. A further benefit is the acoustic performance of ROCKWOOL which is particularly important in large buildings.
ROCKWOOL BeamClad® was utilised as it is suited to a diverse range of modern steel constructions. It is designed to deliver fire protection, is quick and simple to apply and requires no maintenance.
Threesixty Architecture opted to use Rockpanel Woods for the new exterior in three shades - mahogany, cherry and merbau. The grain pattern on each panel is unique and creates a real wood effect. The panels are also designed to withstand the elements, including fire, extreme temperatures and weather. For ease, the Rockpanel Woods were pre-cut, minimising effort on site. As the construction area was exposed to high winds, this made a practical difference.
The result
The Livingston Centre has benefitted from a sustainable solution both inside and out, ensuring the development achieved a high BREEAM rating.
